Aims & Objective
The Association has been registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act 1961 in August, 1997. The first activity of the Association was organizing a day-long Scientific Seminar inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister Shri Anisur Rahaman, Animal Resources Development Department, Govt. of West Bengal on “100 years of Bang”s Disease and its Control in Man and Animals” on 19th September, 1997 participated by Reputed Scientists from Medical and Veterinary’ professions in India. Since then, the Association is working for dissemination of knowledge on Veterinary Public Health (VPH) amongst the medical and veterinary professionals and on increasing the awareness of general public and school children on different facets of VPH problems in the society for their involvement.
The WHO Expert Committees considered Veterinary Public Health as a component of Public Health activities devoted to the application of professional veterinary skills, knowledge and resources to the protection and improvement of human health. Safe food production particularly of animal origin, controlling infections transmissible between vertebrate animals and man (zoonoses), preserving the environment, understanding basic facts about diseases of productive process, promoting human values in society and protecting the health of companion animals are all within the preview of Veterinary Public Health. Urban health hazards associated with animals can be broadly zoonotic diseases; risk of injury, pollution and nuisance and human morbidity due to zoonoses in urban areas can be occupational morbidity, consumer morbidity, domestic morbidity and recreational morbidity. Rural communities are very very prone to zoonotic infections due to intimate contact and association between man and livestock. Wild animals not infrequently visit rural areas disseminating the infections they held.
There are about 300 Zoonoses rioted to be distributed throughout the world and many of them are in existence in India. More and more zoonoses are being described through years as newly identified or as gene- modified existing infections. Mad Cow Disease or Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy, linked with Creuzfeldt Jacob’s Disease (new varient) is the one which created great turmoil in U.K. affecting the EEC. Again SAARS is another infection originated from animal sources created hue and cry in the world particularly in South East Asian Countries including India after the ANTHRAX scare about two/three years back. In recent past, we have the experience how the BIRD FLU have created panic in human society apprehending the disease being transmitted from eating poultry meat and egg and caused colossal economic losses in the Poultry Industry in India. This Association has been organizing public awareness programmes in different scientific and professional meetings, general public assembly, village meetings and campaigning in city markets with posters about these NEWLY EMERGING ZOONOSES so as to safeguard the community health through the prevention and control>of such episodes and prevent economic losses to the country where about 9% of GDP are contributed from the livestock sectors.
The Association organizes every year all-India National Symposium on different VPH topics eg Problems in control of Tuberculosis in Man and Animals, Hygienic Meat Production and Processing for Promotion of Human Health, Veterinary Public Health in 21st Century, Emerging Animal Diseases – Impact on Socio-economic and Health Developments, Bio-Terrorism & Natural Disaster, Problems in Diagnosis and Control of Leptospirosis etc. where eminent Scientists, Administrators, Veterinarians from State Governments, Central Govt., ICAR, ICMR, Universities, Research Institutes delivered talks and participated. Every year the Association observes the National Science Day, World Zoonoses Day and participates in Health Exhibitions and Awareness Programmes in the urban as well as rural areas organized in collaboration with other associations, institutions, etc.
Our endeavour for further extending elaborate activities are hindered due to paucity of fund and lack of financial support from different Projects/Departments from State and Central Governments, statutory organizations, development programmes, etc.
